Vic Gecas will present
Flash: Perplex City - Mind or Eye Candy?

Since Adobe bought Macromedia back into 2005, there has been speculation about what that would mean for both companies' product portfolios.

While watching the Web 2.0 world growing, there has been one underlying, recurring theme; 'static content is no longer good enough'.

People use Flash for many types of animations, websites, games, stand alone applications and cartoons.  With mobile Flash content becoming more and more important it can be used as a tool for thinking beyond the obvious in the classroom.

Much of the professional development in Flash is aimed at the more seasoned ICT practitioners or too focused on the particular medium like software. This presenter will be taking a more holistic approach, looking at interactive design for the web and mobile devices.

This will not be a hands on session as it covers interaction design fundamentals and approaches to designing and planning medium for the Internet and various devices.

The evolutionary nature of Flash means that it is always changing - being used for new things, going in completely different and interesting directions. It is ideal for cognitive and collaborative strategies that assist in higher order thinking in our classroom.

Intended Audience: Middle School, Secondary, Upper Secondary

About the Presenter

Vic Gecas
says:

As a teacher of computing for a long, long time, this is an exclusive excerpt from my book ‘Geeks and Netheads go Mad in Wi-Fi’ that is currently being written.

I started downloading explicit photographs of big hard drives in 1989 at Woodvale Senior High School and moved to South Fremantle Senior High School.

My first ECAWA presentation was ‘Wax your modem for Improved Speed’ in 1992. Learnt about 6xSCSI-2 CDRom drives in 1996. Also bought my first computer, a 386 SX, that virtually had no practical use other than consume electricity.

While at Corpus Christi College I upgraded to a powerful 486 SX that could do ‘multi-tasking’, which meant I could have the ability to run several programs at once, which resulted in me wasting time faster than ever before.

Arriving at AquinasCollege in 2001 I saw the need to upgrade once again to a Pentium that contained really important computer things such as ‘megahertzes’ and ‘megs of RAM’.

I loved Windows 95™ because with the advanced graphics features you could put a little TM sign after the name. In fact you could put a whole host of signs there, such as Windows 95N, Windows 95M and of course Windows BillGatesIsMyHero. Windows 98™MN®©L arrived with USB, you bewdy…

I moved to Sacred Heart College in 2006 as Head of ICT. I have really made sure that I haven’t bombarded staff and students with a whole heap of technical gobbledygook about this amazing new cyberworld we now live in. I have presented them with simple, practical, easy to understand information, most of it I have made up as I go along…so now can you wait a minute while I push my word processing program to the limit and run the spelling checker.

Now, we can all proceed down our fascinating journey into a better, brighter and above all, a more productiv futur.
