Learning Area: Technology and Enterprise

Strand: Technology Process

LEVELS

TP 2 Uses an awareness of how existing products and processes affect people when applying a more deliberate approach, within existing constraints, to designing and producing technologies that meet human needs; communicates verbally, through text, drawings and models; and evaluates throughout the process, comparing the final result with the original intention.

TP 3 Uses an understanding of the relationship between aesthetics and social and environmental effects when generating and communicating designs, both graphically and through models; plans and achieves production, making safe and efficient use of resources; and evaluates whether criteria relating to functional and aesthetic criteria were met.

TP 4 Considers the values and beliefs held by the developer and user when determining the appropriateness of technologies; applies this understanding when creating, communicating and justifying designs; and in planning, adapting and producing technologies includes social and environmental criteria when evaluating progress and results.

Information Technology (IT) has had a dramatic effect on people's lives over the past twenty years. IT has also had major impact on our environment. These effects have been both positive and negative.

In this TASK you are asked to create a mockup of an "Environmental" magazine that addresses these issues. The mockup is to be no more than four pages. It should represent how the full magazine might look, but instead of being 30 pages long it will only be four pages. Your mockup will be more of a prototype than a finished product.

You may choose from any of the topics listed below.

Possible Topics:

Future directions of IT
Recreation
Employment (and unemployment)
Job satisfaction
Resources
Pollution
Living standards
Conservation
Health issues
Other ….

NOTE: If you intend to choose a different Topic (ie "Other") you MUST discuss it with your teacher BEFORE you begin.

There are FIVE things you have to do for this TASK:

  1. Use the library to find out how your chosen topic is dealt with by existing magazines. Write a brief summary of what you find.
  2. Develop the four pages for your magazine.
  3. Write a brief evaluation of the finished product comparing it with what you originally planned to do. If the finished product is different from what you planned, explain why.
  4. Write a brief document that outlines how some people may have different views about your chosen topic. Explain why these differences occur.
  5. Outline some of the special features you included in the magazine to cater for individual differences and how those features make allowances for people's different values and beliefs.

You must also submit for assessment:
