Setting up User Policies in NT4 (with thanks to Paul Grzelec of Baycom Technologies)

The basic approach is to set up user policies for each user with POLEDIT.EXE and transfer these policies to the NT4 Server. When a user logs on to the network the associated policies are downloaded and installed onto the local machine.

STEP 1     Go to a Win95 system and run poledit. Select New File. (NOTE: The reason for using Win95, rather than Win98 is partly the simplicity of using Poledit in Win95 and also because the resulting CONFIG.POL will be compatible with both Win95 and Win98. if you use Win98 the resulting file will not be compatible with Win95.)

STEP 2    Click on the Default User icon and press the Delete key.

STEP 3    Click on the Add User icon.

STEP 4    Type in the name for the user. NOTE: The user must already exist on the NT4 server.

STEP 5       Press OK. A new user icon will appear in the Policy window.

STEP 6    Double-click the "student" icon and set the policies as required. In the example below we have nominated a file on the NT4 server to be downloaded as a 'tiled' background. The file MUST be in ".BMP" fomat and saved onto the NT4 server in C:\Winnt\system32\Repl\Import\Scripts. (This directory has the Sharename "netlogon".)

STEP 7    Click OK when finished and save the policy file to disk as CONFIG.POL

STEP 8    Upload the CONFIG.POL file into C:\Winnt\system32\Repl\Import\Scripts

STEP 9    Go to a client station, log on as your user name and you're done!
