The data lines inside the computer are available at eight of the pins on the Printer Port. If you send a command to set the individual data lines of the printer port HIGH, or LOW you can control devices connected to the port.

The animation below represents the effect of sending a sequence of incrementing binary numbers to the printer port. As each line on the data bus goes HIGH the corresponding LED lights up.
